Cancer is a genetic problem. That is what is taught at universities around the world. However, there are also many researchers worldwide who question the mutation theory. And almost 100 years ago, there were even Nobel Prize winners such as Professor Otto Warburg who described the importance of mitochondria. We belong to a global network of people involved in mitochondrial research, whether in Europe, America, Australia, Asia, or even at African universities. Our own research findings, as well as those of many other researchers, show that mitochondria play an important, if not the most important, role in the development of cancer. They are damaged much earlier or can no longer function as they should, and the known mutations only occur later in tumor development. For this reason, our team, usually working for institutions around the world, is investigating the influence of mitochondria in general and mitochondrial DNA in particular on cancer development and growth.
